Clara Bow

Clara Gordon Bow was born in Brooklyn, New York, July 29th, 1905. She was one of the most famous actresses of the silent screen of the 20's.

She was born in a very problematic family. She had two older brothers, but these were born dead. Her father, Robert Bow, was an alcoholic and mistreated both Clara and her mother. Her mother, Sarah Gordon, was mental ill (had epilepsy), and worked as a prostitute. She never had friends in her chilhood, and the girls laughed at her, beacause she was a redhair. Bow was raped by her father at the age of 15.

In 1921, when she was only 16, she was presented to a beauty contest. She won, with the help of her father, and as a reward offered a role in a film, “Beyond the Rainbow”. To the disappointment of Clara, all her scenes were suprimed. She debuted in 1922 with “Down to the Sea in Ships”. Her mother, more crazy with the time, believed that the profession of actress was bad, and tried to kill her own daughter, but she died the next year. Her fame continued growing for several years. She was at the highest of her career in 1927 with “It”, transformed in “The It Girl” and the archetypal flapper.

But near of 1930, she was accused of addiction to drugs and alcohol, and gambling. Seeing her career ended by the talkies, because she had a too strong Brooklyn accent, she retired from films in 1933, at the age of 28.

She married the actor Rex Bell in 1932, and they had two sons, Tony and George. She cb02.jpgsuffered, in her old age, a lot of weight problems, and mental problems, because she start to remember her horrible chilhood. She was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 1949, after she attempted to suicide in 1944. In her treatments was electroshock.

Clara died on September 27th, 1965, at the age of 60, of a heart attack. After her death, was found that she had of her childhood arterosclerosis. She was buried with her husband, and she has a star on the Walk of Fame.

Is important for me because she was an example of improvement and effort.
